In response to the announcement of the closure of Port Talbot Morfa coke ovens, Wales TUC General Secretary Shavanah Taj said:
“The closure of the coke ovens in Port Talbot is a worrying move by TATA Steel. Trade unions on site knew the ovens were in a state of disrepair, but at no point were they made aware that the facilities were on an operational cliff edge.
“This decision and its lack of transparency will be an unnecessary shock to workers who are already facing a challenging future. The announcement rides roughshod over current consultations on the future of the site, and must not be used as a catalyst to accelerate plans to dismantle the steelworks.
“We maintain our position that steelmaking cannot be allowed to disappear from Port Talbot. It is critical for the future prosperity of Wales and the UK, and is central to creating a secure, greener economy.”
