Policing has been at the heart of Pontypridd since the town developed rapidly during the industrial revolution. As the population grew with the expansion of the coal industry the need for a permanent police station increased.
The town’s first purpose-built station was built on Sardis Road in 1845; this building served the community until 1868 when the site was redeveloped this sat alongside the Police Court reflecting Pontypridd’s growing importance as the administrative and judicial centre for the surrounding valleys. This site stood until 1984 when we moved to our current site on Berw road.
The Pontypridd Police Station on Berw road was opened by County Councillor Squire who was the chairman of the South Wales Police Authority on Monday December 9th, 1985. Chief Constable David A East gave the key to Councillor Squire to formally opening the new station, which would be the new divisional headquarters. This building has served the town for 40 years being the main operational building in the Mid-Glam BCU, hosting our Response, Neighbourhood, Multi-Agency Safeguarding HUB and senior management team.
However, changing operational requirements and the age of the building led to plans for a relocation, these plans began in early 2024, with us moving out of the building in June 2026. With a new station currently being built on Taff Street.
This modern shopfront location will provide a more accessible, visible, and community-focused service in the heart of the town. Works are currently underway on the new station, and we will update in the future when it’s likely to open.
