For coffee lovers looking to keep costs down, Bradford is the UK’s most affordable city for a coffee with the average cup costing just £2.66. Nearly 70% of the city’s cafés are independently owned, making it a haven for those seeking unique coffee spots. Local favourites include The Five Rise Locks Café, renowned for its excellent TripAdvisor reviews and picturesque outdoor seating overlooking the water, as well as Coffee 28, which was named the winner of the 2025 Quality Business Awards for its outstanding coffee and service.

Cardiff ranks as the UK’s fifth cheapest city to buy a coffee, with the average cup costing just £3.46, while more than 60% of the city’s coffee shops are independently owned. It’s home to standout cafés such as Corner Coffee, ranked the 13th best coffee shop in Cardiff on TripAdvisor. Popular with locals and visitors alike, it’s known for its excellent selection of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, as well as its stunning outdoor seating overlooking the water.

At the other end of the scale, London is the UK’s most expensive city to buy a cappuccino, with the average cup costing £4.10. Birmingham ranks second at £3.92, closely followed by Bristol, where a cappuccino costs an average of £3.91. While higher prices often reflect increased operating costs and demand in larger cities, regular coffee drinkers in these locations could find their daily caffeine habit adding up much faster than elsewhere in the UK.

Brighton ranks as the UK’s best city for independent coffee lovers, boasting 57.7 independent cafés per 100,000 people, with almost three-quarters (73.9%) of all coffee shops independently owned. Norwich follows in second, where independents make up 73.3% of cafés and there are 35.8 independent coffee shops per 100,000 residents, while Swansea takes third place with 28.7 independents per 100,000 people and 73.2% of its coffee shops operating independently.
