Port Talbot Sea Cadets have been awarded two heritage grants to support the organisation and to help preserve Port Talbot’s Harbour House.
£5250 has been awarded by The Heritage Lottery Fund to look into the history of Harbour House and the charity which started in 1968. Harbour House, which the cadets lease from Associated British Ports has been in continual use since 1838 and is a Grade 2 Listed building.
The second grant award of £7375 has come from UK Shared Prosperity Fund via Neath Port Talbot County Council’s Heritage Culture Tourism and Events Fund. This will sea the Cadets carry out a condition survey into Harbour House and a feasibility study into potential uses of the building to help preserve it.
Chief Petty Officer (SCC) Morgan Williams who is the Unit Commanding Officer said:
“Firstly we’d like to thank the grant funders for awarding us this money so that we can continue to do the work that we do, not just for today but for tomorrow”
“We’re asking for any old cadets from 1968 to last the few years to come forward with their stories and pictures so that we can help preserve them. We’re also interested in hearing from people who have pictures or stories of Harbour House to contact us.”
“The project will see us creating a film and displaying the heritage at an open day event which will be held this summer.”
The long term plan for the Sea Cadets is to help bring one of the oldest buildings in Port Talbot back to life and making the site a space for the community. The Cadets have recently expanded their age range and now start accepting children from the age of 9.
“The projects all tie into providing Port Talbot Sea Cadets with a brighter future and creating a community asset.” Added Morgan.
The Sea Cadets are open to children aged 12 to 17 and meet at the Old Harbour House, North Wharf, The Old Docks, Port Talbot SA13 1RH on Tuesday and Friday nights from 6.45 pm till 9pm.
