CYBER ATTACK ON PROPEL BEING INVESTIGATED BY ACTION FRAUD & SOUTH WALES POLICE
Action Fraud and the South Wales Police are investigating what is said to be a serious cyber-attack on Propel, Wales’ most recently formed political party.
Propel Leader Neil McEvoy said,
” We had noticed some issues around two months ago and put it down to admin errors. After a few weeks some things did concern us, so we took precautions to improve security. The precautions were not good enough, because it recently became apparent that a coach and horses had been driven through our election data. Files have been corrupted, to the point of being useless.
” Anyone involved in politics knows that this is a crucial time where political parties rely heavily upon the data that they have built up. The reality now is that we have no reliable recent data to use. This puts us at a disadvantage.
” Propel has brought in digital consultants who are revamping digital security. It has been quite chilling talking to them about the nature of the attack. We live in a world now where it is possible for people to hack into personal computers through Wi-Fi and listen to the private conversations that we have with our family in our own living rooms.
” If we were talking about an election to decide who was going to be the next Government or US President, I could possibly understand, but here we are essentially talking about a small number of winnable council seats, which forces out there clearly do not want us to win. I know we have rattled cages over the years and are continuing to do so, but to go to these lengths is really shocking.
” This is an attempt to strangle Propel at birth. The people who have hacked in and the people who shot at our windows at home last month will one day realise that we do not bow to intimidation. It is in our DNA to fight harder.
” We will add the cyber-attack to the list of our home being burgled, my former office being burgled and other attacks. We will just move on more carefully.
” We are spending every single minute of every day to win seats in the election. The conversations we are having with supporters on doorsteps is inspiring hope and motivation in everyone. Wales needs change and Propel will be that change. We will get it done.”
