Winners of The Recycling Showdown revealed!

As part of an exciting waste and recycling campaign, artist Jason Hicks, along with CCBC’s Recycling Advisors, hosted educational workshops at five schools across the borough, teaching Year 5 and 6 pupils the importance of recycling correctly.

Pupils from Ysgol Gymraeg Caerffili, Ysgol Bro Allta, Park Primary School, Bryn Primary School, and Crumlin High Level Primary School got creative by designing their own recycling hero and villain characters.

Following a 3-week voting form open to residents to decide their favourite heroes and villains, the winners have been crowned! The top voted hero was Recycle Flower, designed by pupils at Park Primary School, and the top voted villain was Colin the Corn, designed by pupils at Crumlin High Level Primary School. 

The winning pupils have recently been presented with a certificate and Love2Shop and Amazon vouchers for their school by Deputy Mayor Cllr Dawn Ingram-Jones and Cllr Carol Andrews, Cabinet Member for Education and Communities as well as Recycling Advisors. 

The winning designs will now be cast on to two 4ft art sculptures that will tour the five principal town centres over the coming months.

Cllr Carol Andrews commented “Congratulations to the talented pupils from Crumlin High Level Primary School and Park Primary School who were involved in designing the winning recycling hero and villain characters. This is a great initiative to get our younger residents involved in recycling correctly and I can’t wait to see the designs come to life.”
