According to new figures released by the Forces Employment Charity to coincide with Armed Forces Day, the number of employers actively looking to hire veterans has increased by over 20% in the last five years.
Research by the charity, which provides civilian employment support to the military community, also shows that employers who have hired veterans report significant contributions to their workforce. Almost a quarter (24%) praise veterans for bringing strong leadership skills and 22% are impressed with their team-building abilities. Additionally, 22% of employers highlight veterans’ unique skills, and 20% affirm that hiring a veteran is good for business.
However, more needs to be done to encourage employers to recognise the value of hiring veterans, with less than half of UK employers (41%) knowing where and how to access talent from the military community. Furthermore, only 35% of veterans feel proud of the skills they acquired during their time in the military. Despite approximately 15,000 men and women leaving the Armed Forces every year, less than 1 in 10 (8%) working-age veterans know where to go for civilian employment support.
Employment Advisors for the Forces Employment Charity will be attending Armed Forces Day events around the country, including Swansea, over the coming days to provide help and advice.
