Cardiff child actress recently starred in Call the Midwife is in new Opera at the Cardiff New Theatre

Aspiring Cardiff child actress who recently starred in hit series Call the Midwife is taking on a new Opera challenge.

Danielle Waterman, 8, is facing the feat of performing in an opera alongside her older sister Charlotte (10).

The Opera ‘Carmen’ is produced by award-winning top opera producer Ellen Kent.

‘I have never performed in a professional theatre before and this will be my first chance so it is very exciting,’ says Charlotte, who will join her sister alongside the Ukrainian Opera and Ballet Theatre Kyiv at New Theatre Cardiff.

This marks Danielle’s first Opera performance: ‘This will be my first time in an Opera, so it is going to be a very new experience for me. I cannot wait to perform with my sister.’

‘I have previously performed in The King & I at the New Theatre last year, which was my first time in the theatre. I loved it! I was actually quite upset when it ended because I just wanted to do it again and again and again. Hopefully one day I will get the chance to be on a touring show.’

Danielle says, ‘I am really looking forward to getting on the stage and being in front of the audience. I also cannot wait to try on the outfits and dress up as the character in the role!’

‘I am most looking forward to seeing the stage from the performer’s side, and to also meet the other actors and actresses,’ adds Charlotte. ‘This is a beautiful theatre and such a prestigious Opera- it will be a very memorable experience.’

Danielle and Charlotte have been blazing a trail by securing roles in a string of high-profile TV commercials and productions, including a Disney production.

With rehearsals for the Stagecoach Annual performance in full swing, the Waterman daughters are working with a jam-packed schedule.

‘We are very lucky to have extremely supportive teachers at Stagecoach, including our principal Kate who put us forward for this role.’

‘I really like everything about Stagecoach, from dancing and singing to drama,’ says Danielle. ‘We get a weekly certificate for the best efforts, which is always so exciting to get- it is great to be recognised for our hard work and it feels very special.’

Charlotte is taking one of the main roles in the Stagecoach annual performance: ‘I am really looking forward to being on the stage and making an impact on the performance and audience!’

‘Our Stagecoach teachers are so nice and professional, and they always know how to coach and guide us.’

Danielle’s recent appearance in BBC’s Call the Midwife was praised by TV bosses for the young actress’ bravery as she faced freezing storm waters during Storm Agnes. She was labelled a ‘real trooper’ by the show’s official Instagram account, who also said she ‘received a well-deserved round of applause from the whole team for stepping into those freezing waves’.

‘The teachers at Stagecoach are first rate,’ say Danielle and Charlotte’s parents.

‘They get to know every child and build their strengths. We have seen the girls’ confidence grow and grow because of Stagecoach, and we would recommend every child attend because it has a huge impact and gives them life skills that are not always easy for some children to develop.’
