All you need is love….and a lurcher!

Long-legged lovelies longing to find their forever homes  

 The teams at Dogs Trust Bridgend and Dogs Trust Cardiff are urging anyone with a dog-shaped hole in their life to consider adopting one of the Lurchers in their care.     

  Lurchers are sighthounds (such as a Greyhound, Whippet or Saluki) crossed with another breed and therefore differ in size, with variable hair lengths, and are found in a wide variety of colours. They are known for their long, graceful frames, deep chests, and loyalty as a companion.  

  However, despite their loving natures, Lurchers can often spend longer in the charity’s care than other breeds, and so the charity is now asking people to consider giving a forever home to one of its long-legged residents.  

  Lurchers were the third most popular breed of dog rehomed by Dogs Trust last year, with 524 finding loving new homes in 2022. So far this year, over 350 have come into Dogs Trust care across the UK.   

  Dogs Trust Bridgend and Dogs Trust Cardiff are currently caring for eight long-legged lovelies including, Boots, Andrew, Echo, Ezra, Edgar, Santi, Mickey, and Pumpkin Pie who are all patiently waiting a new abode.    

  Angela Wetherall, Manager at Dogs Trust Wales said:  

“Lurchers tend to spend longer in our care than other breeds and are often overlooked. So, it’s important for us to try and dispel any misconceptions that may exist about the breed and urge people not to rule out a Lurcher as their perfect pet.    

“Lurchers are loyal dogs that form very strong bonds with their owners.  They are trustworthy and gentle, renowned for being affectionate so will bring a lot of love to their owner’s lives. It is a myth that they need a huge amount of exercise and long walks, they do need regular exercise like every dog, but they also very much relish lounging on the sofa. Lurchers really are at their happiest when they are with their owner, the one they love.  

“We are currently caring for eight Lurchers that are desperate to build that special bond with a new owner and find a sofa to call their own.  Each is unique with different personalities and colourings. All have so much love to offer and await their second chance in life.”

Andrew – https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dogs/lurcher/1257767 is a stunning four-year-old Lurcher, full of love and affection and has been at Dogs Trust Bridgend for over a year. Andrew faces some challenges as he has limited sight and requires a predictable environment that can provide him with the confidence, he needs to navigate his surroundings. 

Echo – https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dogs/lurcher/1258794 is an elegant 4-year-old Lurcher, who has been at Dogs Trust Bridgend for over a year. She is a sweet girl who can be shy at first when meeting new people but once she knows you, she is a real diamond and loves a fuss. 

Ezra – https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dogs/lurcher/1266041 is a handsome one-year-old Lurcher who is looking for a home with owners who can offer him great walks and adventures. Ezra has been at Dogs Trust Bridgend for 3 months. He can be a little shy when meeting new people and dogs, but with time, he soon comes out of his shell. 

Edgar – https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dogs/lurcher/1266042 is an enthusiastic 10-month-old Lurcher who loves nothing more than being out and about on adventures. He has been with Dogs Trust Bridgend for 3 months and is looking for his perfect person. 

Boots – https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dogs/lurcher/1267651 is a very handsome 5-year-old Lurcher, who very recently arrived at Dogs Trust Bridgend. This lad is very affectionate and loving. He is currently reserved and has stolen the hearts of the staff at the rehoming centre. 

Santi – https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dogs/lurcher/1263181 is an approximately 3-year-old Lurcher, who has been with Dogs Trust Cardiff for 8 months. He’s a lovely, bright, and bouncy boy who would suit a family interested in training.  

Mickey – https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dogs/lurcher/3045896 is a striking 3-year-old Lurcher who is a very happy chap and a very new addition at Dogs Trust Cardiff. His favourite things are playing with toys and going on long walks. 

Pumpkin Pie – https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dogs/lurcher/1260626 is a sweet but sensitive 8-year-old Lurcher and has been with Dogs Trust Cardiff for just under a year. She is a gorgeous girl who can be shy on first meet, but once she has a relationship with you, she loves to have a play and a cuddle on the sofa.
