Contractors Morgan Sindall are making great progress on the site fronting Heol Gwyrosydd in Penlan next to Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe.

YGG Tirdeunaw is currently based next to the former Daniel James secondary school site at Heol Ddu and once the new build opens the number of places at the school will increase from 420 to 525 with an additional 15 nursery spaces and a Flying Start/Dechrau Deg’ initiative.

The steel frame for the new £9.9m YGG Tan-y-lan School is also underway by contractors Kier Construction.

When that new build at HillView Crescent in Clase opens it will also have an increased capacity of 290 places allowing it to meet additional demand for Welsh medium education in the future.

A report going to next week’s Swansea Council Cabinet meeting updates members on progress and asks them to approve a revised implementation date to increase the capacity of both schools to February 2022.

There is a statutory requirement to consult the Welsh Government, Estyn, governors and parents of any large increases to the pupil capacity of a school to the school pupil capacity. The increases have already been agreed and supported by all parties following the statutory consultation but the implementation date needs to be altered to reflect when the new schools are fully operational.

Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education Improvement, Learning and Skills, Cllr Jennifer Raynor, said: “Since they moved on site both contractors are making great progress and I’m sure that staff and pupils at the two schools can’t wait until their new homes are ready.

“These two schools, which will see a combined investment of more than £21m by Swansea Council and the Welsh Government.

“They are being funded under the 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme with additional capital grants to support the delivery of additional Welsh medium places to further enhance future provision and allow for further growth in demand for places.

“I would again like to thank the Welsh Government for supporting our commitment to Welsh medium education here in Swansea.

“These schools are part of a £150m investment in new and improved school buildings in Swansea – the largest investment in education Swansea has ever seen.

“New or improved schools make a real difference to teachers and pupils and give our young learners the very best possible chance of achieving their full potential.”
