Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has declared a Business Continuity Incident (BCI) because our services are under exceptional pressure, particularly at the University Hospital of Wales.
A Business Continuity Incident simply means that we are taking extra steps to manage this pressure and make sure we can continue to provide safe care to those who need it most.
Our services remain open, and our teams are working incredibly hard to care for patients. However, we also need the support of our communities.
Changes to some planned care
To help create additional capacity, some planned appointments and procedures may need to be postponed.
We will continue to prioritise urgent, time-critical and cancer care, as well as patients who have been waiting a long time. Anyone whose appointment is affected will be contacted directly. If you do not hear from us, please attend your appointment as planned. Wherever possible, we will continue planned care at our other hospital sites.
How you can help
If you need healthcare, please choose the NHS service that is right for your needs:
- Only attend the Emergency Unit if you need emergency care.
- If your condition is not life-threatening, consider using another NHS service.
- Visit your local community pharmacy for advice and treatment for common illnesses.
- Contact your GP for health concerns that are not an emergency.
- Use NHS 111 Wales if you are unsure where to go for help.
If you have a relative or loved one in hospital who is ready to leave, you can also help by supporting arrangements for them to return home or move to the right place for their ongoing care as soon as possible.
Emergency care remains available. If you are seriously ill or need emergency care, please continue to seek urgent medical help.
We would like to thank our communities for their patience, understanding and support, and our colleagues for everything they are doing during this period of exceptional pressure.
By choosing the right NHS service for your needs, you can help us make sure our teams are available for the people who need them most.
