Red Bull Shore Shift is an open-air competition on Barry Island beach between Bay 3 and Bay 6.
What is Red Bull Shore Shift:
Red Bull Shore Shift is a fitness race which challenges athletes to complete a series of functional fitness workouts, all while the tide is coming in. A punishing functional fitness race on the beach, where contestants will have to tackle five coastal-themed workouts against opposing teams but also race against the advancing tide.
Twenty select gyms will race in teams of four (mixed pairs), completing a series of functional fitness workouts, all while the tide is advancing, making the race harder and harder to finish with every passing minute.
The race starts with a 200-300m run to the water marker, followed by a series of five functional workouts (breaks)split by a run to the shore in between each break. These workouts have a coastal-themed twist, including a chipper using a weighted dinghy, synchro efforts using buoys, and a farmer’s carry using jerry cans filled with water.
To finish the race, teams must enter the sea and navigate an anchor drag back to the finishing zone. If these workouts don’t sound challenging enough, this all takes place while the tide is quickly advancing.
How Red Bull Shore Shift is scored:
Teams are aiming to complete the race in the quickest time possible. Each team will have a dedicated judge responsible for counting reps and monitoring movement standards. Once each team finishes the race, they will ring the bell at the back of their pen to signal they have finished.
How to get to Red Bull Shore Shift:
Red Bull Shore Shift will take place on Barry Island beach. Public transportation routes are available, with closest available parking at Nell’s Point Car Park. Access to the viewing areas on the promenade and beach is on a first come first served basis, with capacity limits on the beach to ensure the safety of athletes and spectators.
