Jason Goldberg, Director at SpaSeekers.com, comments:
“Everyone knows that pregnancy is an overwhelming few months in any woman’s life – filled with lots of excitement and happy times, but also exhaustion and stress too. To help mums-to-be take some time to relax and treat themselves, we wanted to round up the top spas offering pregnancy treatments this Spring.
“There are many spa treatments that pregnant women can indulge in, including personalised facials, specialised prenatal massages, aromatherapy, and manicures and pedicures – particularly useful if you can no longer paint your own toenails! However it is important to note that saunas and steam rooms should be approached with caution due to the high temperatures that these treatment rooms can rise to, with some between 70-90 degrees celsius. These high temperatures can cause overheating, dehydration and fainting for pregnant women, particularly in the first trimester, as body temperatures tend to be higher than normal during pregnancy.
“Spas generally may also not offer treatments such as scrubs or wraps during pregnancy, as a precaution. This is because the skin is often more sensitive during pregnancy. In addition, active ingredients (such as lavender, for example) are common in treatments and can be thought to bring on labour for some people – so are avoided as a precaution. If you’re unsure about which treatments might be right for you, it’s always worth checking in with your health professionals and the spa staff ahead of booking in, so you know exactly what’s involved in the treatment.”
