Unfortunately, working in the medical industry isn’t for everyone, and sometimes this isn’t realised by students until after they have completed their degree. As such, new research has revealed the Universities with the most medical dropouts, and Swansea University features in 1st place.
The health experts at NowPatient have looked at the NHS trusts with the most sites, the medical schools training the most doctors, the UK regions with the most medical graduates, the universities with the most medical dropouts and the most clinically appointed students, and also the cities with the most healthcare vacancies to create the Healthcare Student Report.

Swansea University, situated in Wales, witnesses a notable dropout rate among medical trainees, with approximately 4.7% of them opting out of the profession, surpassing any other UK university.
Despite the prestigious medical programs at the University of Cambridge, over 2% of its students veer away from the medical profession after graduation
Imperial College London, known for its rigorous admissions process with an acceptance rate below 40%, sees 1.9% of its students departing from the medical field, securing its position in the top three for dropout rates.
Further findings from the study include:
- Almost three-quarters of Lancaster Medical School students are clinically appointed in the UK – the highest proportion of any medical school in the country.
- Of all the UK cities, you’re most likely to find healthcare vacancies in Lancaster, with more than 300 opportunities per 10,000 residents.
- With 368 sites as of 2022, the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has the most sites of every NHS trust on our list.
