Today is Welsh Language Rights Day, an annual event staged and promoted by the Welsh Language Commissioner to celebrate the first language of among all our communities.

Welsh Language Rights Day 2020

Did you know that here at Swansea Council our hard-working Welsh Translation team receive 200,000 words a month on average to translate. That’s 62,000 words more than Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities and more than any Jack Reacher thriller ever written. And that doesn’t include the social media translation requests they turn around on the day.

The unit is responsible for translating documents from all council departments at Swansea Council, Neath-Port Talbot Council and a number of other agencies including Western Bay Adoption Service and South Wales Trunk Road Agency.

Work sent for translation ranges from corporate policies and strategies, newsletters, legal documents and marketing literature to tweets, social media, PRs, recipies, poems and jokes!

Other services such as proofreading and simultaneous translation are also offered, as well as the occasional Welsh lesson on mutations!
