Thousands of people will be headed in to Swansea and surrounding communities in the coming days to buy presents and to stock-up for the festive season.

At the moment Swansea has one of the highest Coronavirus infection rates in Wales but following simple rules can reduce people’s risk of catching the virus.

Swansea Council is also urging retailers to ensure that they are operating in safe and secure manner.

Council leader Rob Stewart said: “We understand that times are difficult and people are very keen to make the most of the shopping opportunities in the countdown to Christmas.

“We want to thank them and businesses too for stepping up on so many occasions to ensure they abide by Welsh Government rules.

Cllr Stewart added: “Swansea with its extensive mix of national chains, independent retailers and of course the award winning indoor market is a great place to visit for Christmas shopping.

“Throughout the pandemic we have supported businesses and we encourage people to do the same and shop local this Christmas as our city centre and surrounding retail areas need all our backing.

“So please remember to shop sensibly – wear a mask indoors unless you are medically exempt, make use of the hand sanitisers which should be readily available and please socially distance both while queuing to get into shops and while on the premises.

“Council officers will be out and about assisting retailers to ensure that they are operating in a safe and responsible manner. Our aim is to avoid the need for enforcement action and I’m pleased to say we are seeing a very high level of compliance amongst businesses and very good practice. Our officers will help ensure this continues.”

Swansea Council reduced the cost of car parking at all council-run city centre car parks throughout December and January to encourage shoppers into the city. Parking is free on Sundays. Park and Ride costs just £1 all day Monday to Friday.

Under Welsh Government rules introduced today (December 4) all restaurants, pubs and cafes need to shut by 6pm and they cannot serve alcohol at any time for consumption on the premises. But they can still food and non-alcoholic drinks.

Cllr Stewart added: “These new restrictions are likely to see an increase in demand in supermarkets and licensed premises so again I would urge people to behave responsibly.”

Russell Greenslade, Chief Executive of Swansea BID, said: “Swansea city centre shops are offering you a very warm welcome at this festive time of year and are working really hard to ensure you have a good shopping experience while staying safe and helping prevent the spread of the virus.

“Shops have set out arrangements to promote social distancing, the wearing of masks and helping customers to keep their hands clean. By doing the simple things well, we can all have a great festive experience in Swansea. We look forward to seeing you in the city centre.”
