Caerphilly County Borough Council is calling on primary school pupils across the county borough to put their creativity to the test by helping to name seven brand-new food and garden waste collection vehicles.
Pupils are being invited to come up with fun, memorable and environmentally themed names for the new vehicles. After entries are submitted, local councillors will select a shortlist, before members of the Council’s Waste and Recycling team vote for their favourites.
The winning names will be proudly displayed on the new collection vehicles, alongside the badge of each winning school, giving pupils the opportunity to leave a lasting mark on a service that serves every resident across the borough.
The competition also aims to highlight the environmental benefits of food waste recycling. Nearly a third of the contents of green bins collected in Caerphilly County Borough is made up of food waste that could have been recycled. If recycled instead, that material could generate enough renewable energy to power between 700 and 900 homes for a year.
Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Waste and Recycling said: “This delivery of seven food and garden waste collection vehicles is just the beginning, as CCBC continues to makes strides towards it Waste and Recycling Strategy, which outlines our plans to future proof the service and help us reach Welsh Government’s recycling target of 70%.
“Our young people are the recyclers of the future, so it’s important that we involve them in conversations about waste reduction and recycling from an early age.
“This competition is a fun and creative way for primary school pupils to engage with an important environmental issue while making their mark on a service that helps keep our communities clean and sustainable.
“We hope that schools throughout the borough take part in the competition and I look forward to seeing the fantastic ideas that pupils come up with.”
