Iconic decommissioned tall ship saved from the scrap yard and given a new life

After languishing dockside for over half a decade and nearly being scrapped, the iconic tall ship Lord Nelson is preparing to sail again — marking a remarkable new chapter for one of Britain’s best-known sail training vessels.

The return of Lord Nelson represents 8 months of determination, practical hard work by dedicated volunteers and belief in what the ship can become. Given a new lease on life by Captain Locky MacLean and his crew known as Good Pirates, the vessel is departing Barry Docks, Wales UK this weekend on a two year humanitarian and environmental mission.

“We are grateful to be able to resurrect such a fine ship, by putting her to good use helping remote island communities, training the next generation of tall ship sailors and creating a platform for positive change on the oceans.”

Behind her return is Good Pirates, a group of sailors, adventurers, maritime professionals and ocean-minded campaigners determined to put Lord Nelson back where she belongs: at sea as a force for good on the oceans.

Their mission goes beyond simply getting a historic tall ship moving again. Good Pirates sees the vessel as a platform for humanitarian missions, adventure, education, ocean conservation and bringing people together around the issues facing our oceans.

Once under Royal Patronage, the vessel was laid up in 2019 when former owners,  Jubilee Sailing Trust went into liquidation. Now, after 8 months of hard work refitting and repairing, the ship is scheduled to depart Barry Docks on the weekend.
