Three Cardiff teenagers are behind bars following a burglary spree which included the theft of eight cars and six bikes in 22 days.
In August last year, Jacob Lawday, 19, and Evan Andrews, 18, stole three sets of keys from an address in Llanmaes before driving away in a Kia X-Ceed and Mercedes E 220, stolen from outside.
Later that day the vehicles were recovered in the Penarth area after the owners used tracking devices. While officers were at the location of the two vehicles, they witnessed a Range Rover being driven in a suspicious manner by a young male.
Following checks on the registration plate, officers discovered the vehicle was being driven on a cloned, false plate. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle Lawday and Andrews ran away but were detained after a short foot chase.
The Range Rover had been stolen from an address in Cardiff three days earlier.
Following their arrest and while on bail as the investigation continued, Lawday and Andrews targeted a further four addresses over two days in September.
They went on to steal a BMW and a Peugeot from an address in Ogmore By Sea. The BMW was fitted with a tracker and was later recovered in Cardiff. The same BMW had been seen on CCTV with a Ford Transit and an eye witness allowing officers to locate and stop the van in Penarth which was being driven by Andrews with Mackenzie Daly, 19, and Lawday as passengers.
Following a search of the van, officers recovered four stolen bikes and a car key for a BMW. All three were arrested.
Detectives pieced together evidence from the various burglaries and thefts which resulted in the three teenagers being convicted.
All three were convicted of multiple burglary and theft offences. Andrews and Daly were this week sent to a young offender institution for 32 months while Lawday was sentenced to two years in prison.
