Poppy wreaths have been placed on a special train in Swansea bound for London.

To mark Remembrance Day, Great Western Railway organised a Poppies to Paddington operation that saw wreaths sent from towns and cities across its network to be laid at the war memorial on Platform 1 at Paddington Station.

Civic dignitaries including the Lord Mayor of Swansea Mark Child, Council Leader Rob Stewart, the council’s Armed Forces Champion Wendy Lewis, the Lord Lieutenant of West Glamorgan Louise Fleet and Regional Chairman of the Royal British Legion Philip Flower and representatives from the forces handed over the wreaths at Swansea Station.

The arrival of the Poppies and the Remembrance service was being broadcast live on GWR’s Facebook page at 11am.

Cllr Child said: “Due to the pandemic Remembrance events have had to be different this year but we have been determined to commemorate those who have served and those who have given their lives for their country.

“I would like to thank Great Western Railway for working with our Armed Forces on arranging this tribute and for inviting Swansea and other communities across the UK to take part.”
