The new Pupil Referral Unit being built in Swansea is already a work of art.
Young people who will attend ‘Maes Derw’, the new £9.65m school in Cockett, when it opens next year were invited to brighten up the construction site.
Their colourful designs created as part of their art lessons can be seen on the hoardings surrounding the plot.
Pupils also chose the name of the new school which translates to Oak Field.
The development is being funded by Swansea Council and the Welsh Government under the 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme and is being built by Kier Construction.
Due to coronavirus restrictions Kier has developed an on-line tool to support staff and pupils to familiarise themselves with the new building and illustrate progress that has been made .
When open the new purpose built school it will provide staff and pupils with attractive and functional facilities all on one site – replacing the outdated accommodation at Brondeg House in Manselton, the Step-Ahead site in Cockett and the Arfryn Education Centre in Penlan.
Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education Improvement, Learning and Skills, Cllr Jennifer Raynor, said: “This significant investment will be game changing for the service in Swansea and will create a much more positive and inviting learning environment that will enable us to provide greater opportunities for learning and to fully implement the new Curriculum for Wales.
“The artwork the pupils have developed is fantastic and I’m always pleased to see contractors positively engaging with pupils and the work Kier is doing is an excellent example of this.”
