Library staff on hand to help with the Census

The census is a survey that happens every 10 years to build a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales.

Census Day is 21 March, although forms can be submitted from the beginning of March onwards and help will be available into May.

Census 2021 will be ‘digital first’ and accessible through an online platform, although paper forms can be requested on the Census website www.census.gov.uk or by ringing the Census helpline.

A number of assistants working for Swansea Council’s Library Service have been trained after volunteering as advisors to support people to complete the census online or a paper form.

Sessions are by appointment from the library and are available between 9.30am and 3.30pm Tuesday to Friday and between 10.30am and 2.30pm on Saturdays.

Due to coronavirus restrictions they are being delivered either by phone or via Microsoft Teams although if restrictions are relaxed sufficiently they could be delivered in person at a designated area in the library.

People who require support are asked to ring the Central Library on 01792 636464 to book a session which lasts up to an hour.

When they make an appointment, customers will be reminded of the information they will need for the session and staff will try to gather an idea of the type of assistance they require.

Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, said: “Everyone must complete the census and provide accurate information as it helps decide how services are funded.

“A number of library assistants are on hand to help those that need it so please book a session if you need support. They will provide helpful and friendly advice to help ensure you are able to complete your form.”
